Between October 4, 1927, and October 31, 1941, Jotzon Burgelom, with about
400 workers carved the sculptures at a height of 60 feet, equivalent to 18
meters, and he choosed these presidents
to represent the the first 150
year of American history.
In 1933, Mount Rushmore subject to the jurisdiction of the service of
national parks, and the engineer Julian Spoots helped in the project
development by improving its infrastructure, He developed the tram even to able
the workers to reach Mount Rushmore summit , by July 4, 1934, the face of Washington was completed, as the
face of Thomas Jefferson was completed in 1936, and the face of Abraham Lincoln
on September 17, 1937.
Burgelom was selected these presidents because of their role in the
preservation of the Republic and expand their territory, and it was supposed to
the face of Thomas Jefferson to appear in the region to the right of
Washington, but after the start of work there, they revealed that the rock is not suitable to do
that ,So they blew the face of Jefferson using dynamite and they began carving a new form to the left of
Washington.
The only way for the Sculptors to complete their work was by remove the stones where they were not allowed to use
any other materials to form the faces, and (Burgelam) use of the dynamite to get rid of the large
pieces of granite stone, and after carving rocks on an oval shape, sculptors
began to work and carved the faces of four presidents.
The Sculptors used the drilling machines to get the facial features in addition to using a chisel to get rid of appendages and then used a pneumatic hammer to reach a white and smooth surface, Therefore, the Mount Rushmore is a priceless masterpiece.
